What are the best beaches in Puerto Plata?

It depends on what you're looking for, and the coast is divided into three clear sections. Near the city are Playa Dorada, with the highest concentration of hotels and calm waters; Costambar, more residential with gentle waves; and Playa Cofresí, where Ocean World operates. To the east, twenty minutes away, Playa Sosúa occupies a sheltered bay with clear sand and good visibility for snorkeling, while Playa Alicia, in the El Batey sector, is more secluded and less crowded. Continuing to Cabarete, you'll find Playa Cabarete, the epicenter of kitesurfing due to the constant afternoon wind, and Playa Encuentro, five minutes west, which is the area's surf beach and works best in the morning. At the far east, already in Río San Juan, Playa Grande and Playa Caletón offer the most open coastal scenery, next to Laguna Gri Gri. To the west, Punta Rucia provides boat access to Cayo Arena, a sandbar in the middle of the sea.

What you should know before driving from beach to beach

The order matters more than the distance. The coastal road is two lanes for almost its entire length and passes through the centers of Sosúa, Cabarete, and several towns, where speeds decrease, and motorcycles, pedestrians, and roadside vendors appear. Puerto Plata to Sosúa takes about twenty minutes, Sosúa to Cabarete fifteen more, and from there to Río San Juan about an hour. Punta Rucia is on the other side: about two hours west on a road that narrows after Imbert and loses illumination, so it's advisable to leave early and return before dark. Access roads to less developed beaches, such as Playa Encuentro or the paths to Playa Caletón, are dirt or uneven asphalt and deteriorate with rain. How to explore the coast with a car rental in Puerto Plata

A vehicle completely changes how many beaches you can visit. Without a car, you are limited to your hotel's beach and an organized excursion; with a car, you can have breakfast in Puerto Plata, spend the morning in Sosúa, have lunch in Cabarete, and watch the sunset at Playa Grande. Fixed excursions don't allow for that because they follow a set schedule and usually cover only one spot per day.
