Historic Centers of the Cibao: Santiago, La Vega and Moca by Car
The Cibao holds the oldest history in the country outside Santo Domingo, and almost no one covers it fully. Santiago de los Caballeros was founded in 1495 by order of Christopher Columbus and moved to its current site beside the Yaque del Norte river after the 1562 earthquake, while La Vega preserves the ruins of the original city built in 1494 and destroyed by that same quake. What to see in the historic center of Santiago de los Caballeros
The route starts at Parque Duarte and opens onto Calle del Sol. Facing the park stands the Cathedral of Santiago Apóstol, built in the second half of the 19th century and resting place of president Ulises Heureaux, and beside it the Palacio Consistorial, a late 19th century city hall now a municipal museum. Calle del Sol, the city traditional commercial artery, connects this core with the rest of downtown. Minutes away sit Fortaleza San Luis, a colonial-era military fort that works as a museum, and the Don Tomás Morel Folkloric Museum, devoted to carnival masks and traditions. Closing the monumental axis are the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, its tower rising some 70 meters over Castillo hill, and Centro León, opened in 2003 with the most complete Dominican art and anthropology collection in the region.
What to know when touring the historic centers of the Cibao
Downtown Santiago is for walking, not driving. The streets around Parque Duarte and Calle del Sol are narrow, one-way and dense with motorbikes, so the practical move is to leave the car in a paid lot on the perimeter and walk. From there, La Vega is about forty minutes via Autopista Duarte, where Santo Cerro and La Vega Vieja Historic and Archaeological National Park concentrate the island earliest colonial history. Moca is half an hour from Santiago on secondary roads and holds the Corazón de Jesús church, famous for its stained glass, plus the site where Ulises Heureaux was assassinated in 1899. A real warning: the roads between Santiago, Moca and La Vega are two-lane, shared with motorbikes and trucks, and unlit in several stretches, so drive them during daylight.
Linking the three centers with a rent a car in Santiago
Two well-organized days cover everything. Spend the first on Santiago historic center, starting at Parque Duarte and ending at Centro León or at the Monument at sunset, when the lookout offers the best view of the valley. On day two take Autopista Duarte to La Vega, climb Santo Cerro, visit the La Vega Vieja ruins and return through Moca. That circuit does not exist as an organized tour, which is the point: without your own vehicle it simply is not done. Santiago was founded in 1495, but the 1562 earthquake destroyed the original settlement at Jacagua and forced the move beside the Yaque del Norte river, so its visible heritage is mostly 19th and 20th century, organized around Parque Duarte, the cathedral, the Palacio Consistorial and Calle del Sol.
What is La Vega Vieja and can you visit it?
It is La Vega Vieja Historic and Archaeological National Park, preserving the ruins of Concepción de La Vega, founded in 1494 and destroyed by the 1562 earthquake. It sits minutes from Santo Cerro and can be walked in under an hour.
